Sustainability with Plymouth University

Roland Levinsky Building

Our campus and operations are an important focus of our sustainability strategy.  They constitute part of our three stranded approach (tri-cameral) to managing sustainability, alongside our work on teaching and research.

Through the Office of Procurement and Sustainability we seek to develop and manage sustainable resource strategies for our estate, procurement of goods and services, and travel and transport arrangements.

“Sustainability is not just about the environment – it incorporates financial and social responsibility as
well. The decisions we make must take them all into account, and there is an intricate tension in getting that balance right. So at Plymouth, we take a holistic view, working together across procurement and sustainability, research, and the curriculum. We call it a ‘tricameral approach to the triple bottom line’.

Green Gown Award

In November 2011 the University won the Green Gown Award, Continuous Improvement – Institutional Change, for this approach, in recognition of the work undertaken to embed earlier successes in sustainability.

“The tricameral approach embracing University research, teaching and operations, is a powerful,
holistic and systematic approach which has embraced staff, students, estates, curriculum and community well after external funding has ceased,” they said.

“The University has found its place as a catalyst for change in the city and region. Coupled with its commitment to sharing its growing institutional intelligence regarding the embedding of sustainability, the Plymouth experience is highly relevant and transferable to the sector”.
