The School of Marine Science and Engineering is multifaceted and the largest of its kind in Europe containing approximately 95 academic staff, and 1880 undergraduate and postgraduate students. It has interests that span civil and coastal engineering, geography, marine biology, marine science, marine studies, and mechanical and marine engineering. Many of the courses are professionally accredited. In order to manage its wide portfolio of taught courses, the School has four subject groups, namely, civil and coastal engineering, marine biology, marine sciences, and mechanical and marine engineering.
For the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the School submitted under several units of assessment, with over 80% of those submissions judged to be of an international standard or world leading. To underpin its teaching and research the School has a number of well equipped laboratories and other facilities.
