Returning to study

At Plymouth we are proud of our history of welcoming students from a broad range of ages and backgrounds.

For many of our students the journey into higher education has not been directly from a sixth form school or college. They have instead chosen to return to education after time away to care for and raise a family, pursue paid employment, or indeed other life experiences such as travelling and volunteering.

Information and advice for adult returners

The Routes to Higher Education service offers specialist free and impartial advice for adult returners or anyone else planning to return to study.  We are part of the South West's HE Guidance Service  where you can receive impartial guidance on-line. UCAS also offers advice to mature students on returning to higher education.
Our experience is that those students offering a little more life experience are lively, enthusiastic and committed members of the university community and make a huge contribution to university life.
We do, however, understand that the decision to enter higher education is not one that is taken lightly and it is important to weigh up all of the implications of making such a commitment. The following pages are intended to help address some of the major concerns surrounding returning to study.

Topics we can provide advice with include: course choices, suitable academic qualifications and pathways for entry, application, together with links to other suitable areas such as student funding and childcare.

In addition to this practical advice, we hope that we can offer you more of an insight into university life and hopefully dispel some of the myths that often surround studying at a higher level.
