Living cost loans

All new students are eligible to a living cost loan (also called maintenance loans) if you are studying full-time. This is to help towards your day to day spending such as food, travel and accommodation.

In 2013/14 the maximum annual loan available will be:
  • Students living at home £4,375
  • Students living away from home £5,500
Neither your tuition fee nor living costs loans will be repaid until students graduate and earn over £21,000 a year.

The table below shows examples of what you can expect your monthly loan repayments to be once you are earning over £21,000:

Income each year before tax Monthly income Monthly repayment
Up to £21,00 £1,750 £0
£22,000 £1,833 £7
£25,000 £2,083 £30
£30,000 £2,500 £67
£35,000 £2,916 £105

Living grants

Students from a family with an annual income of less than £42,611 will be eligible for a grant. Students from a family with an annual income of less than £25,000 will be eligible to receive a full grant of £3,354/year.

The difference between the living cost loan and the living cost grant is that the grant never needs to be repaid.

If a student receives such a grant their maximum loan will be reduced but by less than the value of the grant.
