Funding for sports

Introduction

Plymouth University offers annual Sports Scholarships to students who represent their county nationally or internationally in a recognised sport. The scholarships are renewable subject to the student maintaining an appropriate level of performance.

There are three types of scholarships: Drake, Gold and Silver. The Drake and Gold Award is worth up to £1,500 per year with the Silver Award up to £600 per year. The Drake Scholarship is awarded for marine sports only and is worth up to £1,500.

The successful students can benefit from:

  • Funding for competition entry fees
  • Travel and subsistence expenses to competitions
  • Strength and Conditioning sessions
  • Free use of Plymouth University's fitness suite
  • Personal programmes and lifestyle management
  • Advice and support on diet and nutrition 
  • Free use of the sports injuries clinic
  • Flexible learning
  • Coaching and mentoring support
  •  

​Criteria

The sports scholarship scheme supports top class students in their chosen sport whilst studying for their degree at Plymouth University –
 
  • Applicants will only be considered if on a Plymouth University degree programme
  • Scholarships are awarded when the applicants place on a university course has been confirmed
  • Students must represent their chosen sport at regional, national or international level
  • Endorsement from the recognised Sports governing Body must be included
  • Submit of a portfolio including evidence (where possible) of media coverage of past achievements and details of other sponsorship or funding secured
  • Applications can only be made for one grant at any one time

Scholarships are awarded for participation in the following types of events:

  • World Student Games
  • British Student Representative fixtures
  • National/international representative events organised recognised governing Bodies of Sport and/or national International student sporting organisations

 
Applications are not supported for participation in the following types of events:

  • National/International events not supported by a British Governing Body
  • Overseas tours by student union clubs
  • Open events where no pre-qualifying time/score is required 

 

All grants are awarded under the following conditions:

  • Plymouth University is mentioned whenever possible by the team/individual concerned and the university logo displayed at every opportunity
  • Should the student withdraw from their degree course part way through the year the grant will be reimbursed pro rata at the discretion of the university
  • Scholars will have regular contact with the Plymouth University, Public Relations team particularly prior to an event
  • Following all events a full report should be submitted to the Plymouth University, Public relations team
  • Funds will be allocated through the Recreation Service
    If possible scholars are expected to play, coach or support a Plymouth University Sports Club
  • Wherever possible scholars are expected to volunteer within a university club team or school.

Applications for Sports Scholarships must be submitted by October each year.

To apply for a sport scholarship complete the application form and submit it with a portfolio and a letter of support from your National Governing Body.
