Learning Development - part of the Learning Gateway

Learning Gateway logo resized.jpgLearning Development is part of the  Learning Gateway  and works with students and staff to develop skills for learning. We aim to inspire and empower people to think critically and creatively, to achieve their best and to enjoy their studies.

Learning Development provides one-to-one and group tutorials, the drop-in zone in the library, email support, taught sessions within programmes or by request from students and online resources on academic literacy to help with:
  • writing
  • developing an academic voice
  • thinking and reflecting
  • using and referencing literature critically and correctly
  • reading strategically and making useful notes
  • preparing for exams and presentations
  • managing time
  • coping with study stress

A series of study guides is available in the Library and online from Learning Development.
 
Through Disability Assist we also provide specialised services for students with disabilities and specific learning difficulties.

PALS

Peer Assisted Learning Scheme ​(PALS) provides opportunities for students on some University programmes to work informally in group sessions run by more experienced students on their course to reinforce and discuss their learning.

WrAssE

Writing for Assignments E-Library (WrAssE) is a resource to help people learn about writing at university. It includes:

  • examples of student essays and other university assignments from a number of subject areas writing
  • comments from lecturers about why the writing is good - or how it could be improved developing an academic voice.

The Royal Literary Fund (RLF) Writing Fellow

Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellows are established professional writers of literary merit, representing a wide range of genres, including biography, translation and scientific writing. The network of posts has reached every part of mainland Britain, involving old and new universities and departments in science and technology as well as in the humanities. Some 225 writers have held posts at 100 different institutions.
