IT Services

As a student with Plymouth, you  have access to computers (PCs or Macs) in open access areas across the University.

Faculties include further provision based on the needs of the course.

All students have access to a 10GB mailbox and 25GB of file storage through UPCloud, our cloud-based email, collaboration and data storage service.  And because it’s browser-based, you are able to access all these services from virtually any computer or mobile device with an Internet connection.

The whole campus is covered by a secure, high-speed WiFi  network (wired access in halls) so you can use your laptop anywhere you like.

Find out more about the eduroam WiFi service.

All PCs offer a wide variety of general (industry-standard) and specialist software running on Windows XP.  All your learning materials are available through web-based student portals.

Open Access IT facilities are available:

  • Within the Charles Seale-Hayne Library, all day, every day of the year
  • In the Babbage Building 08.0022.30 MondayFriday; 07.3022.30 Saturday & Sunday.
You will need your University card to swipe in after staffed hours.

Details of opening times for all student computing areas are available through ILS Self-Help.

If you are studying at one of our other centres, information about opening hours at the Knowledge Spa (Truro), Somerset College and UCP Marjon is available on their websites.

Can't find a PC to use? Try using the PC Finder tool, also available for mobiles via the Mobile With Plymouth University phone app ('PC availability').

Printing facilities are available from the PCs in all open access areas. Or you can print from your own laptop if you're using WiFi on campus. Prices are really low, from just 4.5 pence for A4 black & white.

What can I expect when I arrive?

Once you have been provisionally accepted for a place at the University you will be able to register online for your computing account using your student ID.

You will be allocated your username and a password which will give you access to our network, all facilities and the student portal. This provides the gateway to student services and teaching and learning modules which you study.

By registering, you agree to abide by rules and policies set out on our intranet (You will be prompted to log into the portal).

IT skills training is included in many courses in a variety of ways. In addition, there are computing staff in the open access areas at each campus/site to provide support, together with helpsheets, workbooks and online training packages to get you started.

IT training

The University-wide software service has about  300 different applications for use in teaching and research.  Your School may well have its own specialist packages such as marketing games, data analysis and multimedia file creation, and provide additional training.

Web-based e-learning

The University gives students access to a range of online tools and services, to support your studies and your future employability.

Available for use anywhere, at any time, these include:

  • module sites providing not just learning materials, but also access to collaborative tools such as blogs and wikis
  • online coursework submission - no need to travel to campus to hand in or pick up assignments
  • access to your own e-portfolio (PebblePad), not just while you are a student here but into your further career.

Students with disabilities

The University welcomes and supports students with disabilities, and endeavours to meet individual needs.

We will try our best to help each student in whatever way we can to access IT facilities and work with computers, through adjustable furniture, assistive technologies or alternative formats for resources.

For more information please refer to the Disability ASSIST webpages.
