Working in partnership

This official partnership between Plymouth University and Plymouth Albion RFC was launched in November 2009 to promote and encourage participation in sport and physical activity in Plymouth.
The partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to creating social enterprise, as well as health, educational and employability opportunities for young people.
As part of the arrangement, Plymouth University students have been granted access to a range of professional level training facilities and coaching. Those participating in rugby and other sports-related disciplines are able to experience professional club coaching, and share their acquired practical expertise with the local community, for example, becoming volunteer rugby coaches.

The partnership also enables students to benefit from work placements and volunteering opportunities, ranging from marketing the club and physiotherapy provision to working as stewards and catering staff on match days. Students have also led on a project evaluating the feasibility of installing turnstiles at the ground.

Under the professional guidance of Albion, the University's men’s 1st team enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in recent history, finishing the 2010/11 season undefeated and with a promotion to Tier One of BUCS competition. They also won the annual Varsity match against UCP Marjon, and narrowly missed out on cup win against Cardiff in the BUCS Western Conference Cup.
