Sports scholarships

The Sports Scholarship scheme supports top class students in their chosen sport whilst studying for their degree at Plymouth University.

To be considered for a sport scholarship students must represent their chosen sport at regional, national or international level and need to submit a sports portfolio, a completed application form and written support from their recognised Sport’s Governing Body.

The sports scholarships are renewable each year subject to the student maintaining an appropriate level of performance, whilst on a Plymouth University degree programme.
There are three types of scholarships:
  •  Gold Award
  • Silver Award
  • Drake Scholarship Award 
 
The Drake scholarship is specific to  marine sports whilst the Gold and Silver Scholarships are for all other sports. 
 
Successful sports scholarship students can benefit from:
  • Funding for competition fees
  • Travel and subsistence
  • Expenses to competitions
  • Strength & Training sessions with qualified sports centre staff
  • Free use of the Nancy Astor Sports Centre
  • Flexible learning and mentoring support





Sports Scholarships are awarded for participation in the following types of events:

  • National/International representative events organised by recognised Governing Bodies of Sport and/or National International student sporting organisations

  • World Student Games

All grants are awarded under the following conditions:

  • The University is mentioned whenever possible by the team/individual concerned and the university logo displayed at every opportunity
  • Should the student withdraw from their degree course part way through the year the grant will be reimbursed pro-rata at the discretion of the university

  • Scholars will have regular contact with the Plymouth University and the Plymouth University Public Relations Team particularly prior to an event

  • Following all events a full report should be submitted to the Plymouth University Public Relations Team and the Recreation and Active Leisure Service.
