Dyslexia

If you think you may have dyslexia we can advise you on routes to assessment.

Plymouth University is not legally obliged to offer you a diagnostic assessment for a Specific Learning Difficulty/Dyslexia. We do offer assessments which currently cost £200 (this includes a £50 non-refundable deposit if the appointment is cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice).

Assessments carried out by Disability ASSIST

The usual procedure is for you to complete the attached Dyslexia Checklist. This gives us some indication of the extent of your difficulties. Based on the information in the checklist we will let you know if we feel an assessment is appropriate. If there are not many indicators of dyslexia you can still be assessed or you may wish to contact our reception in the Learning Gateway to request a free computerised dyslexia screening to give you a more informed decision.

We would still like you to complete the checklist if you have been previously assessed and require a new report.

Private assessments

These should be carried out by an Educational Psychologist or a Specialist Teacher who holds the AMBDA qualification and a current practising certificate. It is important that the assessor knows that you are an HE student who may be eligible to access the Disabled Student Allowance.

Alternatively you can contact PATOSS (Professional Association of Teachers of Specific Learning Difficulties) on 01386 - 712650 or look on the website or in the Yellow Pages for local Assessors.
