​This three-year BEd (Primary) course, planned with our partner schools, has four strands:

Primary curriculum studies - learn how to teach, plan and assess all primary school subjects
Specialist subject studies - study art and design in some depth
Education studies - explore issues about teaching and learning
Experience in educational settings - teach in a different school every year

Detailed information about the four strands.

 Stage 1

  • Develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to teach children including an understanding of how children learn and develop
  • Study modules comprising specialist subject, core and foundation subjects and education studies
  • Two-week and five-week school placement across the primary age range, both with a fellow student
  • Undertake a one-week saturation placement linked to the foundation subjects
  • Begin to become familiar with the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Stage 2
  • Work towards achieving the standards for QTS
  • Develop greater knowledge and understanding within specialist subject, core and foundation subjects and education studies
  • Extend your expertise, particularly in your subject specialism, ICT and special educational needs
  • Four-week paired school experience, a three-week school experience linked to the core subjects and a one-week saturation placement related to your specialist subject
  • Develop your understanding of professionalism and professional identity
Stage 3
  • Extend your expertise including leadership of your subject specialism and a dissertation relating to pedagogy
  • Reflect on your professional identity and how you might shape practice in the future
  • Eight-week school experience, with full responsibility, in the chosen age phase within your pathway
  • Undertake a final assessment of the standards for QTS
  • Gain support in obtaining and preparing for your first post
