Some progress onto postgraduate degrees like our own MA Design, while others have trained to be teachers. Alumni regularly return to share their professional experiences with our students.

3D Design: Career Options

Information provided by our Careers and Employability Service.

Keith, our Careers Adviser for 3D Design, says:Coatstand entitled 'strange behaviour' by Lorna Wilby
"Design graduates can find it takes time to become established. Two factors that are crucial to your success are thoroughly researching your chosen career area, and making contacts through networking.
"A report on the long term career paths of art and design graduates indicated that almost a third of the respondents who have graduated from 3D Design courses have done some teaching or lecturing. Also, that Three Dimensional Design graduates are the most likely to have been self employed at some stage since graduating. Whilst a high proportion had been in full time employment at some point, this can be a competitive profession."

Visit the Plymouth University Careers website for more information on any of these areas, or call in to see the Careers & Employability Team in Gateway in the Roland Levinsky Building.

  • Critical awareness
  • Problem solving

Relevant work experience
You can never have too much experience. Now more than ever it’s important to start gaining work-related experience from year one to gain an advantage in the labour market. There are distinct advantages in gaining work experience and entering competitions while you are studying. Firstly, work experience will make your CV stand out from the crowd, enhancing your prospects for the future. It shows that you are committed and have developed transferable skills that might be of use in the marketplace.
A second year module is intended to provide students to maximise their learning opportunities from short term placement. Students achieve deeper learning by working, and gain experience outside of university teaching. Students are encouraged to carry out their own projects inspired by the practitioners work, gaining feedback to help improve their career prospects. This can be very beneficial in giving students an insight into an area of work, in developing relevant skills and in building contacts.
