Nursing course summary

The BSc (Hons) Nursing degree is a three year full time modular course designed to prepare students for their future role as a registered nurse and meets the new Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards implemented in 2011, ensuring that our graduates will be able to help shape the nursing workforce of the future.
 
Following successful completion of the degree, students are eligible to apply for registration with the NMC in the relevant field of the Council’s register. Regardless of which field you are in, the course will provide:
  • a strong emphasis on clinical skills acquisition
  • early clinical placement
  • profession specific personal tutorial support
  • inter-professional learning and teaching
  • equal weighting is given to theory and practice, contributing to overall classification of the BSc (Hons) award
  • staff who are active in research, have published widely in their area of expertise, teach on generic and shared modules across all fields of nursing, engage with, and in, clinical practice

Nursing (Child Health) summary

This is a challenging but fulfilling career. You will be caring for children and young people with a range of health needs. During this course you will gain experience of caring for children and their families in a public health role, including long term care and those with an acute illness.
 
Your placements on this course will enable you to experience a variety of care settings ranging from acute hospital care to care in the community. We offer the opportunities for quality placements in both acute and community settings throughout Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. Placement experience covers the care of children and young people from neonates through to adolescence and beyond. Children's nurses support families during periods of great stress and this course will teach you the latest competencies whilst helping to develop your communication skills in dealing with a wide range of issues.
 
The profession is demanding physically, intellectually and emotionally but great satisfaction can be gained working closely with children, young people and their families.

Course funding

  • You are currently entitled to a means tested bursary (the amount depends on your current financial circumstances) for the duration of your course through the NHS Business Services Authority if you are a UK national
  • The NHS will currently meet (in full) your Tuition Fee Contribution on your behalf if you are a UK or EU national.

Career opportunities

Children nurses can work within hospitals or community settings for either the NHS or a private sector employer. Graduates can undertake further study to specialise in certain fields. Community based employment opportunities include school nursing and health visiting.
 
Salaries within the NHS start from  approx. £21,176 (Band 5) per year (correct as at 1 April 2010).
 
Students may choose to continue studying after graduating. Those achieving a First Class Honours degree have the opportunity for PhD studentships here within the Faculty of Health.

Entry requirements

Five GCSE (C or above) including English, Maths and Science. Minimum 280 points (160 points from two A levels). Preference is given to those with a science profile. Other qualifications such as BTEC and Access to HE (45 L3 credits, 15 from Biology – 33 of the 45 must be at Merit or Distinction level) in health/science will be considered.
