stage 1

The first part of the course includes all the basic seafarer knowledge required to make the most of your first trip to sea, as well as all the safety courses required by international law. You will learn about everything from navigation to cargo handling. The second half of the first year includes your first trip to sea. This will normally be of 2-4 months duration. You will receive a full induction and familiarisation with shipboard life. This is the opportunity to develop basic seamanship skills and also apply the academic knowledge you gained in the classroom.

stage 2

Most of the second year is spent developing further detailed professional knowledge in the classroom. You will be learning more about Navigation and extending your understanding of modern ship construction and stability.

stage 3

Most of the third year is spent back at sea, completing the work-based learning required to become a certified 'Officer of the Watch'. By now you will be getting close to the last hurdle and will complete a final phase back in Plymouth, which includes assessment and preparation for the final oral examination.
The oral examination is the traditional final test of your professional knowledge and experience. You are going forward into a serious career where you will be responsible for large capital assets and the health and safety of others.
Once you have achieved this last challenge, you will be able to go forward to a well-paid and interesting career - supporting one of the world's most important international industries.

stage 4

Successful completion of the FdSc Marine Studies qualifies you for direct entry to the final year of BSc (Hons) Marine Studies. This allows you to upgrade your qualification to full the honours level which will open the doors to an even wider range of career opportunities.
