BA (Hons) TV Arts
Jonathan Palfrey TV Arts

Television - Interactivity - Streaming - Mobile - Convergence

This new BA in TV Arts is designed as a final stage from a foundation degree or equivalent in the areas of Television and Media Production.
The emphasis of this course is on the creation and production of moving image and sound programmes and channels for interactive television environments, including the internet, digital broadcast and mobile technologies.

TV Arts aims to challenge the fast moving changes and opportunities in convergent new media technologies. It will also address critical thinking in this exciting new arena. As a student on the course, you will be working with some of the most cutting-edge and developing technologies as well as considering the relationships between technological constraints, formal constraints and the creative process

  • You have your own base-room, equipped with Apple Macs running Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Flash, Dreamweaver, Wirecast etc.
  • You have access to a video/lighting studio with Chroma key facility and also have booking access to a Pro Tools/Logic based studio suite with large live-room facility and access to a wide variety of microphones and portable recording systems.

Live Broadcasting and Internet TV

A strong feature of the TV Arts programme is the opportunity to get involved in live broadcasting and the development of a dedicated internet TV channel. For the first time this year students used their develping skills to stream live footage of the Degree Show.

The annual Arts Degree Show incorporates the work of every final stage art, design  and media student. It is the culmination of three challenging years and a great opportunity for students to show their work off to friends, family, fellow students, prospective employers and the general public. The transformation of working studios into sleek gallery spaces takes weeks of hard work and months of planning, but on the opening evening all is revealed and everyone can breath a sigh of relief as they congratulate themselves on a job well done and look forward to life beyond university. It is this momentous and busy event that TV Arts students chose to use as a backdrop for a live internet TV broadcast, an opportunity to test and hone their skills. Fronted by student Ryan Brewer the team presented, interviewed and commented on the show with a live stream linked from the Degree Show website (www.plymouth.ac.uk/artsdegreeshow).

The final footage has been edited into bite size chunks with each piece serving as a snap shot of the work produced by students within each of the Degree Show featured courses including Fine Art, 3 D Design, Digital Art and Technology, Graphic Communication with Typography, Illustration, Media Arts, Photography, and of course TV Arts!

Student Voice - James Boon

In the following video TV Arts Student James Boon gives us an overview of TV Arts, discussing the breadth of the course, and the facilities available. James also introduces the equipment used for the Degree Show live streaming project which is explained further by programme leader Phil lEllis.

TV Arts is a "Really interesting course, a really broad course as well ... everything from radio, tv, film ... there are so many career opportunities" James Boon

The Channel and Collaboration

Students will have opportunity to employ skills and passions to generate a functioning voice through the production of their own TV Channel, learning by practical production processes with others. You will work individually and collectively to develop the policy, content and scheduling of a working Internet Television or IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) channel in association with Twofour. This will encompass gaining an understanding of the technologies involved, research into the field and application of networking and marketing skills as well as provision of the content.

TV Arts recognises collaboration as a key aspect of production alongside the facilitation of new ideas and practices. Collaboration or working towards a shared goal can be exhilarating and can be very powerful. It can encompass many methods and ideas and can develop creative practices further, faster and more in-depth.

Each student will work with a local, national or international institution or individual towards a shared creative outcome. Students are free to find their own collaborators but we also have businesses, organisations and individuals who come to us seeking students to take on opportunities on media related projects.  Such work must be fit for the purpose defined by the collaboration; it is therefore out doing real jobs in the world outside of university which is a very valuable experience for students soon to face the transition to the world of employment.

TV Arts students collaborated in the creation of an online TV channel called Rant2Rave. Here they can be seen gathering interviews at the TUC march in London in .

What the students say

"I chose to study TV Arts at Plymouth because it was a natural progression from my foundation degree at Exeter College, which was also a University of Plymouth course. I liked the fact that the course had strong links with local production and broadcasting companies such as TwoFour and Silverstream TV, and that we would get to meet and work with people from the industry.  I was really impressed with the design and facilities at Plymouth University. I know this might sound quite cliché but everyone has been extremely approachable, friendly and helpful which really makes a difference when experiencing something new."
