Course breakdown​

Stage 1 (Level 4)

  • Initially teaching and learning is shared with students from other health professions allowing you to gain core generic knowledge and skills
  • Practice skills gained through an eight-week supervised placement within the South West
  • Occupational therapy studies introduces theoretical foundations and core skills underpinning practice
  • Your first placement will be within a health, social or community setting
  • Develop problem solving, reasoning skills and an embedded commitment to lifelong learning.

Stage 2 (Level 5)

  • Profession-specific modules take a lifespan approach and are designed to provide an integrated core of essential knowledge and skills for OT practice
  • Modules on inter-professional working and research help you become confident in your role as a developing OT
  • Participate in the OT intervention process during the placement.

Stage 3 (Level 6)

  • You will gain greater independence in your final placement and, with support, be expected to demonstrate a range of core skills required for an entry level practitioner
  • Profession-specific modules will provide insight into, and prepare you for, the responsibilities that face newly qualified graduates
  • Inter-professional modules will help you to develop and consolidate your management and research skills
  • The final teaching block will help you to consolidate your experience and growth towards your imminent entry into the occupational therapy profession.

​​Course funding

  • For 2012 entry you are currently entitled to a means tested bursary (the amount depends on your current financial circumstances) for the duration of your course through the NHS Business Services Authority if you are a UK national
  • The NHS will currently meet (in full) your Tuition Fee Contribution for 2012 entry on your behalf if you are a UK or EU national

Term dates

For details of the terms dates for the next academic session, please refer to the term dates page. 
 
You are expected to attend from 9am until 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Placements are full time.
 
Please note: In order to successfully complete your course and be eligible to apply for a professional registration you must complete a specified number of practice placement hours along with your theoretical study. This is a requirement of the HPC. Therefore you will only be able to take personal holidays during the specified leave periods for your course. This includes induction week where it is vital you attend ALL sessions.

 


 

Professional accreditation

On successful completion of the course, you are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

 


 

​​Theory location​

The theory side of the course will be based in Plymouth at the Peninsula Allied Health Centre (PAHC).

 


 

Additional checks​

You will be subject to a Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau and Occupational Health check.
