Industry links

The department has strong links with the industry and our theatre visits programme, which runs in conjunction with Peninsula Arts has played host to some of Britain’s major theatre and dance artists. Theatre directors Yukio Ninagawa and Eugenio Barba hold honorary doctorates from Plymouth University, as do the renowned choreographers Russell Maliphant and Matthew Bourne and the influential performance artist Marina Abramović. Russell Maliphant and Wendy Houston have used our theatre to create and preview work prior to London premiers. Jordi Cortés and Kirstie Simson have performed and taught professional development workshops, which some of our third year and post-graduate students have taken part in. The department hosts an employers forum where students can network and find out about our partner organisations such as the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth Dance, Theatre Royal and Attik Dance.

Students present their own, and professionally directed work across the three years on the main stage in the Roland Levinsky Building , in studio settings and externally for site-specific projects

Performance Lab

The following Video was created by Year One students as part of the Performance Lab 1 module.

This module addresses collaborative and interdisciplinary practice. It is a practical and studio-based module which emphasizes the development and presentation of student-led work and collaboration across year groups.

All of the work has been developed, filmed, edited and promoted by the students, we think you'll agree the results are impressive!

Humanities and Performing Arts showcase

The School of Humanities and Performing Arts produces a showcase of the highest quality stage 3 student work at the end of each academic year. We invite an audience that includes representatives from local and regional theatres, including Theatre Royal Plymouth and Taunton Brewhouse. Take look at the short video below to see what it was all about.
