Dance Theatre

Staff leading on this dance degree understand the importance of students gaining work experience and industry knowledge  through engagement with the wider dance community and with external professional training opportunities and projects. The department has fostered close links with leading dance organisations and professional artists and there are extra curricular training and work based learning opportunities, master classes and residencies , performance platforms and showcases  and a professional development module available to students at stage 3 . As part of the degree study and focus on professional development planning, students are encouraged to draw from these different experiences and work to their particular strengths and interests.

Claire Summers (graduate Dance Theatre) has just been appointed by Dance in Devon  as their South Devon Dance ambassador. Claire is also a member of Exim Dance Company.

Stacy Weeks (graduate Dance Theatre) says, ‘This degree prepared me and gave me the confidence to pursue an active career in dance. Without the encouragement, expertise and support of the department, I would have never had the knowledge to co-form Exim Dance company or create a successful dance film within months of graduating. Not to mention continuing into postgraduate study and discovering a research subject to keep me engaged for the rest of my life’.

Students graduating from BA (Hons) Dance Theatre go on to work in a range of employment full and part time, paid and voluntary posts aligned to their dance skills and knowledge.  As students progress through their degree many will have made useful contacts with potential employers and dance organisations and will apply for internships, part time and freelance workshop and teaching opportunities, project and performance work with dance companies and other relevant work experience such as in arts management and funding. Most dance students will use the first year after graduating to continue to develop their career portfolio and combine temporary part time work with some voluntary project dance based work. This enables dance students to continue their technical dance skills and training and for those who aim to take further qualifications such as a Masters or a PGCE dance course to plan ahead financially.
