GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN LAW (GDL)

The course is designed principally for non law graduates who have decided they wish to pursue a career in the legal profession. It is also suitable for law graduates without a qualifying law degree or with a ‘stale’ law degree (e.g.one that is too old to be recognised as current).

WHY STUDY GDL AT PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY?

Most students undertaking the Graduate Diploma in Law will have the specific aim of entering the legal profession as a solicitor or barrister. The Law School has good established connections in the solicitors profession and the Bar in Devon and Cornwall and you will get the chance to:
  • Meet practising lawyers during the early stages of the course
  • Be involved in Student Law Society Careers Events (for example the annual cheese and wine dinner)
  • Find opportunities for work placements or mini pupillages or marshalling with a judge

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

"Since completing the GDL, I have progressed and completed the Legal Practice Course and now work at Woollcombe Yonge law firm in Plymouth as a trainee solicitor within the criminal department.

I am constantly applying the knowledge and skills gained on my postgraduate programme within a real life legal environment. Plymouth is great place to study and work and I would highly recommend the course to anyone interested in changing their career path."

MOOTING

There is an active mooting culture at Plymouth Law School. This is run by our excellent Student Law and Criminal Justice Society.

There is a very competitive internal competition every year, as well as teams participating in regional, national and international competitions. Law students studying at the University of Plymouth Law School recently triumphed over other law students to win the final of the UK Law Students Association national mooting competition.

Victoria Lush and David Murray (pictured above) took on students from Liverpool University in the mock court case which saw them presenting a legal issue involving the law of contract before a judge.

PLYMOUTH STUDENT LAW & CRIMINAL JUSTICE SOCIETY

As well as Course Committees, Law students have the opportunity of standing for election on the Student Law and Criminal Justice Society. The committee members of the Society organise various social events, guest speakers and careers advice each year.

The Plymouth Student Law and Criminal Justice Society has a reputation for being a social pillar of the student body and introduces students to the all-important skill of social networking.

You will have the opportunity to experience many memorable events such as the Annual Law Society Ball which is attended by both students and lecturers alike. The Honorary President of the Society is Judge William Taylor, Recorder of Plymouth.
