Marine renewable energy - wave and tidal

The UK has some of the world's highest potential for renewable energy from offshore waves and tides. The resource is particularly abundant in the south-west region. Through The Peninsula Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMaRE) project, the University is a key partner in the Wave Hub. This is a groundbreaking renewable energy project to create the UK's first offshore facility to demonstrate the operation of arrays of wave energy generation devices. The School of Marine Science and Engineering is a research partner in several research projects aimed at providing optimal, cost-effective tidal turbines and wave energy devices, as well as investigating their possible effects on the environment. The University has a new hydrodynamics facility under construction and recently launched an MSc in Marine
Renewable Energy.

Professional links

The University is consistently ranked as one with the highest number of students achieving student membership of the industry’s professional institutions.  The student learning experience is enhanced by including lectures presented by industry speakers and students also undertake projects that simulate real life practice, which are jointly assessed by a team of industry professionals and academic staff. We have been scrutinised by a panel of industrial advisers which help to ensure that our graduates are equipped with the skills needed by industry. Academic staff are not just lecturers; most are also research-active and maintain close links with industry through consultancy, knowledge exchange and training.

Teaching and industry collaboration

Teaching staff are friendly, supportive and enthusiastic. Students benefit directly from links with many marine-related organisations in Plymouth and the surrounding area. Plymouth University and our collaborators possess a wealth of relevant expertise among the highly qualified teaching and research staff. Every member of academic staff pursues related research interests, the results of which inevitably feed through to enhance their teaching. This research includes oceanography, engineering design and manufacturing processes, materials sciences, sports physiology, and business and management. Student feedback confirms that teaching and the student experience in Plymouth are considered to be excellent.

Plymouth and the South West - a superb natural environment

The surf beaches of Devon and north Cornwall are within easy traveling distance and rivers and estuaries of all types are plentiful within the region. There is no better location than Plymouth to engage in the once-in-a-life-time experience of studying for a degree, especially if you are interested in a marine career. The shores and clear coastal waters of Devon and Cornwall provide an unrivalled resource for marine sports. The natural marine amphitheatre formed by Plymouth offers a varied showcase of marine recreation on a daily  basis and is only a short walk from the University, as is the University's own marine sports centre.

Plymouth is a city with a famous maritime history and home to some of the nation's leading marine research institutions. These include the Marine Biological Association (MBA), the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) and Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML).
