MATHEMATICS WITH EDUCATION: CAREER OPTIONS

Our Careers Adviser for mathematics with education, says:
"There is a national shortage of qualified mathematics teachers and teaching is a popular destination for mathematics graduates with approximately 1 in 10 mathematics graduates in the UK going on to teach either straight after their degree or later. If you are considering teaching as a career after university, then studying for a mathematics with education degree will allow you to gain practical experience in the classroom. This will enable you to find out if you enjoy, and are suited to, a career in teaching before embarking on the required postgraduate teacher training such as a PGCE. If, after gaining this teaching experience as part of your degree, you decide that teaching is not for you, then you will still be able to access the wide range of opportunities where mathematics graduates are in demand, including careers within the business, financial, IT and scientific sectors.”

Skills you can develop during this course include:

  • Communication
  • Analysing and interpreting data
  • Numeracy
  • ICT
  • Logical and abstract reasoning
  • Problem solving

What our students say

Photo of Sara Henshall in the classroom'I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Plymouth University. I studied a variety of modules throughout the three-year course and gradually opted for more and more education-based modules. Hands-on teaching experience gained during my second year gave me a valuable insight into some of the many aspects of teaching and learning.'
