Course summary

If you want a rewarding, well paid career in the care and development of buildings, this forward-looking course should be top of your list. Considered one of the best in the country, its strengths lie in its unique focus on sustainability and the excellent employer links developed by the course tutors for the benefit of students.
Building Surveying is a popular professional field overseen by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Traditionally, Building Surveyors deal with the restoration, renovation and repair of older and modern buildings and advising the owners and purchasers of property how to get the most from their assets. As survey after survey demonstrates, sustainability has become a central driver for the surveying professions, which is why the industry urgently needs graduates who have the solid grounding in sustainability, green building design and low carbon management that this course is specifically designed to provide.

This course is offered by the Environmental Building Group, part of the School of Architecture, Design & Environment

What the students say

buildingimage 2.jpg“Since graduating with my BSc (Hons) Building Surveying and the Environment in 2009 I have enjoyed a very successful and exciting professional career.

Despite the economic turmoil I secured a graduate position at the leading international built asset consultant EC Harris as a Project Manager. I then moved to London to work with some of the UK’s most high profile developers such as Land Securities and Grosvenor. My experience has also extended to working in the energy giant ExxonMobil’s Global Real Estate team and also taking a lead role for retailer Sainsbury’s in their store extensions programme. I am currently on secondment at Qatari Diar, working out of a very nice office in Mayfair! Here I am rubbing shoulders with some of the industry’s leaders, on some of the most prestigious schemes in the UK and the World.I have also recently become a chartered member of the RICS, reaching this achievement in just two years. I have no doubt that my achievements to date were founded on the quality of education I received at Plymouth and my degree has certainly been the platform for me to forge my career with confidence.” 2009 career update from 2009 Building Surveying graduate N.C. working for global surveyors E.C. Harris

Richard Roach alumni"A key part in me getting this job over other graduates, and also being given the environmental role, was the knowledge gained from the sustainability content of the course and the passion that the lectures showed for this subject. I am really enjoying being in the industry but do look back on the good days I spent at the University. Thank you very much for the education I received.”  RR: 2010 BSc (Hons) Building Surveying and the Environment graduate, now with Interserve Project Services Ltd.

“I became a partner eight years after graduation, the shortest period of time in the firm's history”
MB:
now a Partner at Cushman & Wakefield LLP

"After being offered places on similar courses, the deciding factor that led me to Plymouth was the strong focus on sustainability. This advantage was clearly demonstrated to me during a graduate scheme interview in which I was asked to prepare and present a 5 minute talk on how young professionals should ingrain sustainable thinking to their activities. I was offered the job from 29 other candidates applying for the position. I graduated with a first class honours and have had the world at my feet ever since."  JH: BRE Global:  2008 BSc (Hons) Building Surveying and the Environment graduate and BREEAM consultant

"Not only is sustainability a core (RICS) competency, I was also asked several questions during my  interview about it.  Luckily I knew all about it because of the course! There were quite a few graduates going through the process with me, all of whom went to other Universities.  I was shocked that none of them knew about sustainability”  BJ: Atis Real Surveyors, email received December 2008

“I'd just like to say thanks for organising the ENBS333 session. I really appreciated having some time to interact with practicing professionals. I found it very interesting and useful. Many thanks.” AS: (Final stage BSc (Hons) Building Surveying and the Environment student)
