Relevant Work Experience

With so many career options on offer after a degree in mathematics, students will need to ensure that they have developed commercial awareness and the ability to apply their skills in a business context before graduating.  One of the best ways to do this is to undertake a year-long placement as part of your mathematics degree.  If you choose this option you will spend 48 weeks in a paid placement between year two and your final year, working for a suitable company.

Our mathematics and statistics students have recently gained work experience at top employers such as Big Four accountancy company KPMG, IT giant Fujitsu and the Department of Communities and Local Government.  University life also provides many additional opportunities to develop your employability such as the Plymouth Award, summer internships, volunteering and other work experience opportunities on offer.  Taking full advantage of these opportunities, particularly during the first and second year, will put mathematics students in an excellent position to secure their preferred career on graduation.
