Stage 1
- A foundation in geological knowledge, laboratory and field skills
- Learn about key Earth processes, such as plate tectonics, through a practical approach to the study of minerals, rocks, fossils and geological structures
- Field, lecture and practical-based learning is supported by a programme of small group tutorials
- The first year is taught jointly with the other geology degree courses and provides you with a broad foundation in geology
- Lecture and practical modules include Earth history; palaeontology; mineralogy; and sedimentology. Key skills such as effective study techniques and the application of IT are developed through tutorial-based modules
- Training in geological fieldwork is undertaken in southwest England, including residential classes
Stage 2
- Consolidate your knowledge and skills developed in stage one
- You will explore the evolution of life, the Earth's internal and surface systems, and a range of methods and techniques in applied geology
- You will also learn to make geological maps and develop new field skills, again supported by small group tutorials and workshops
- You will also learn to make geological maps and develop new field skills while undertaking fieldwork in Spain. This is supported by small group tutorials and workshops through the year
- Stage two modules extend your core geology knowledge and skills
- Your studies will include geophysics; sedimentology; palaeontology; stratigraphy; petrology; structural geology; and tectonics
- There is a strong emphasis on the practical side of geology, including observational and interpretative skills and how these are applied to solve problems relevant to the geological professions
- Local and residential field classes provide hands-on experience in exploring the nature and distribution of geological resources and geohazards

Stage 3
- You develop specialist knowledge and skills in the applied geosciences and undertake advanced fieldwork
- Draw upon our research and consultancy expertise in fields such as georesources and engineering geology
- You will complete an independent field-based project, supported by a programme of professional skills development
- This part of the course allows you to select from a broad range of specialist modules
- Core or recommended modules may include terrain evaluation; engineering geology; hydrogeology; petroleum geology; hydrocarbon exploration; and the tectonic setting of mineral deposits
- A wide range of option modules are available including geohazards and georesources and other modules from related geology degree courses
- You will undertake an independent research project and fieldwork on relevant aspects of applied geology, as well as completing a module in personal development and professional skills
- Choice of a compulsory overseas fieldtrip to Death Valley or Sicily
