Teaching within the lifelong learning sector

This programme aims to provide teachers, trainers and tutors with the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and professional values necessary for a  teaching career within the lifelong learning sector.  This sector  includes further education colleges, adult and community education, work-based training providers, offender learning and public sector organisations.

  • Teaching in the lifelong learning sector has undergone a period of professionalisation in recent years, and this award is now the nationally-endorsed qualification
  • Bursaries may be available for applicants teaching in national shortage subjects

This PGCE route is suitable for applicants who hold a Bachelors or Masters degree.  Otherwise qualified applicants should apply for the Certificate in Education.

Full or part time study

This programme is available to study both full (1 year duration) or part time (2 years duration).

What the students say

'I had begun a PGCE at secondary level the previous year, but soon discovered that I much preferred teaching at Level 5, and so made the decision to move into the Post-compulsory sector. I was looking for a course in the South-West and had heard good things about Plymouth University for teacher training, so I applied immediately.'

Teacher training placements

As part of the programme you will be in a teaching placement in a lifelong learning sector setting for two days per week (FT) and one day per week (PT). The lifelong learning sector provides a wide range of different vocational and academic opportunities to adults and young people. Teaching adults and young people is an incredibly demanding but very rewarding career.

Teaching in Further Education (FE)

Your placement will be in a further education college which are complex and dynamic environments.  The programme will help you to prepare for the many challenges you may face. The organisations we select for teaching placements provide high quality support for our trainee teachers and many trainees have gone on to secure work within these organisations.
