Programme structure
This one year PGCE, planed with our partner schools has three strands:
- Teaching experience in three different schools;
- Professional studies, which includes the studying the nature of teaching and learning, developing classroom and leadership skills;
- Primary Curriculum Studies, which includes learning how to plan, teach and assess all the subjects of the National Curriculum for children aged 5-11 in Primary schools.
School experience is fundamental to the programme. In the first term, there are regular visits to primary schools where you work with children, teachers and faculty tutors. You will also learn to teach the core subjects of the national Curriculum and well as the non-core, to an introductory level, through lectures, seminars and workshops on campus and through independent study.
The second term starts with an extended placement in a school followed by further consolidation of your knowledge of the subjects of the National Curriculum and how to teach them. You will be trying out your growing skills and reflecting upon your professional development as a teacher.
The third term of the programme is largely occupied with your major school experience, in a different age phase than the previous one, where you undertake – as closely as possible- the full responsibilities of a qualified teacher. The final element is preparation for your first teaching post as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) and the leadership of a subject curriculum area.
