E-counselling

WHAT IS E-COUNSELLING?

If you are not able to access our face-to-face service for a variety of reasons, you may be interested in thinking about e-counselling, a way of communicating with a counsellor by e-mail.  This is something we can offer during term-time.

When looking at this option it is important to consider whether it is an appropriate form of support for your needs.  Here are some of the pros and cons:

Advantages

Online counselling can be an effective source of support if you are unable to schedule an appointment for a variety of reasons. For example, you may:
  • be experiencing an illness or disability that makes it difficult for you to attend the service in person and/or text-based communication would be preferable
  • be away from university on a work or training placement
  • have irregular schedules
  • have parental or carer responsibilities which makes attendance difficult

Disadvantages

  • working without verbal and visual interaction may feel strange
  • sometimes technology breaks down and there may be a delay in response

E-counselling can be helpful in a wide range of circumstances. However, it does have limitations and is not suitable for everyone.  The initial contact will explore whether this service is the most appropriate for you.

IMPORTANT

The e-counselling service cannot operate as an emergency service.  Please refer to Support available in times of crisis.
