BIBLIOTHERAPY AND SELF-HELP BOOKS
Books can help!
There is good evidence to show that people can often help themselves by reading the right ‘self help’ book. We offer a range of books through the Counselling Service. Some of these belong to a specific local scheme called the Devon Book Prescription Scheme (see below) and many are CBT-based. Others are more general and may be recommended by counsellors using a variety of approaches.
Bibliotherapy is the term used to describe the use of self–help books to help those who are experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety, depression or other common emotional difficulties. The self-help books forming part of the Devon Book Prescription Scheme, compiled by professionals, are highlighted in the booklist below. Copies of these books can be found in your local library as well as the University library.
Some of the best books have step-by-step treatment programmes, with exercises, self-assessments, diary sheets, etc, to be completed by the reader. Of course, if you are using a library book, then please make a copy of these and don’t write in the books. If you find a book really useful, you should be able to buy any of the recommended titles through a good book shop. Like other self-help methods you have to put in some effort and be motivated to spend time following the instructions and doing the exercises.
You may be happy choosing a book and working through it on your own. Books can be helpful on their own or be the first step in tackling the problem by finding out more. If you would like support in the use of the book you can call into the counselling service and book an appointment.
Equally if you are coming to the counselling service for the first time, and if you and your counsellor decide that bibliotherapy might be helpful for you, they will discuss this with you and how you can be supported by follow-up contacts - these may well be by telephone or email.
What if the book does not help?
We know that the books on the list often help, but they may not work for everyone. If you are still experiencing difficulty or distress after trying hard with the self-help programme, then we will discuss the next best steps for you at follow-up.
