‘Secret millionaire’ returns

Plymouth graduate and inspirational entrepreneur Dominic List returned to the campus recently, sharing his knowledge and experience with students and catching up on latest developments at the University.

Dominic, who graduated in 1997 with a degree in Design Technology and Business, went on to found several very successful companies, most notably Comtact, the technology services and integration firm he established in 2005. It has since been listed in The Sunday Times Tech Track 100, the UK Deloitte Technology Fast 50 and the European Fast 500, and helped see Dominic crowned IAB’s Business Entrepreneur of the Year.

Dominic, who has featured in Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire and supports several charitable projects, was visiting the University with his wife Andriele. He led workshops with current students and also youngsters from a number of schools within the city.

“Fifteen years ago, I was in the same place as these students are now, studying at Plymouth University and with not a great deal to my name,” he said.

"I had ideas, but it is only through drive and hard work that I have brought them to life, and I hope I have conveyed that to the students I have met. Today, there is a lot more support available for budding entrepreneurs, and if they make the most of that I hope they too can become successful in their future careers.”

Professor Julian Beer, Pro Vice-Chancellor, said: “Entrepreneurs like Dominic are an inspiration not only to our current students but to those more widely thinking about starting up or running their own businesses. Dominic’s successes, and the fact he is a Plymouth graduate, emphasise how achievable these aspirations can be."

“The University provides a high level of support to those thinking about or running their own businesses through the Growth Acceleration and Investment Network, ranging from accommodation at various locations, such as the Tamar Science Park and Innovation Centres in Cornwall, to access to a wide range of talent and funding.”
