Partner college students

Many students transfer from our partner college network to study on the Plymouth campus each year.  For student relocating to Plymouth we provide the same service as we do for current students progressing from one stage to the next.  These students have the opportunity to apply for access to the database of approved accommodation online.

Choosing from our database of approved accommodation enables students to:

  • choose from a wide range of different types of accommodation that suits most needs and budgets;
  • make arrangements to share with any friends that may be moving at the same time;
  • select a whole property as a group or share a place with students who already study on campus (this helps broaden their social network);
  • visit the campus and the surrounding area to choose a preferred location.
For further information please visit our approved accommodation section.  You may also wish to find out more about managing agents.

Should you require any additional information please do not hesitate to contact the Student Accommodation Team.

Contracts

Once you sign a contract it is legally binding, usually for a period of at least ten months.  Therefore, we recommend that you only sign for accommodation:
  • when you are certain you will be relocating to Plymouth;
  • if you are sure it will provide the right type of environment for the whole year;
  • if you are in a group, when all friends in the group agree on the decision.

The Approved Housing Assessors within the Student Accommodation Team can read contracts for private accommodation with you and explain what you are signing.  Most contracts in approved properties will be assured shorthold tenancy (AST) agreements which are standard in the UK.

The contract should confirm what you agreed with the landlord, such as:

  • period covered by the contract minimum six months, usually at least 10 months (September - June);
  • amount and frequency of payments;
  • responsibility for paying charges related to the property;
  • responsibility for keeping the property clean and tidy;
  • things that you should and should not do within the property.

Travelling

Some students consider travelling each day from their home to campus.  It is important to consider whether this is practical, both in terms of the length of the journey, and the frequency with which you will need to be on campus.

Living environment

Many transferring students are entering the final year of their course; if this is the case experience shows it is best to secure accommodation with students who will be equally focussed on their studies.  In some cases larger houses or accommodation blocks may prove too disruptive.

If you are a group of students who are transferring together, think about whether you want to rent accommodation as a group or individually.  This will influence the type of accommodation you are looking for and when you may wish to start looking.
