University-managed halls of residence

University-managed halls of residence are currently offered on a 40, 42, 44, 46, 48 or 51 week licence. Students signing up for a room in University-managed accommodation would be required to pay for their accommodation even if they subsequently had to attend a placement in a different location.

After the licence period ends, rooms in halls of residence are controlled by a different office within the University and many are used for conference visitors. However, some rooms are available for students during the summer. If you live within a university hall and wish to remain in managed accommodation for a longer period, it is likely that you would have to move rooms at the end of your licence.

University-allocated cluster flats

University-allocated cluster flats in Plymouth are currently offered on a 43 week tenancy agreement. Students signing up for a room would be required to pay for their accommodation even if they subsequently had to attend a placement in a different location.

Students wishing to stay on in their room after the end of the agreement are able to arrange a summer tenancy agreement directly with Unite plc.

Approved accommodation

When looking for approved accommodation you will need to consider carefully the contract you sign.

If you are starting in September, most landlords ask students to sign a ten-month assured shorthold tenancy, which means that you are legally required to pay the rent for the whole period. Should you wish to sign a shorter contract you would need to ask the landlord if this is possible.  Most landlords would be happy to accept students who wish to sign a longer agreement.

Should you need to stay longer than your original length of contract, your landlord would probably agree.  If not, the Student Accommodation Office maintains a list of accommodation providers who let rooms during the summer.

If you choose homestay accommodation, you can sign an agreement allowing you more flexibility i.e. you may give a month's notice.  Details of what homestay accommodation is can be found in the approved accommodation section.

Managing Agents

The University works with a number of managing agents in the city that specialise in student lettings. Peninsula Student Living might be of particular interest to health students based in the PAHC building due to its location. Please see our managing agents webpage for details of all the agencies registered with us.
