How to register your property with us

Landlords who manage their own properties are able to apply for registration on this database. The Student Accommodation Office will make an initial visit to ensure suitability for the student market. We continue to meet with you every 12-18 months thereafter. Please note that we do not meet with any tenants of the property or any other third party. We may request works to be carried out to ensure the accommodation is as safe as possible for the student tenants and it may be necessary for this to be completed before the property can be added to the database and any vacancies advertised. In return for meeting our requirements in terms of the safety of the property and the standard of management, the University currently promotes registered accommodation without any charge. Please note that we can only register properties that are let solely to students and on the basis of one occupant per room.

Homestay – The University works in partnership with Homestayfriend for this particular type of accommodation and it will be necessary for you to contact them and place your property with them directly.  We then advise our students looking for homestay accommodation to visit their website.  The Student Accommodation Office will be informed of your application to Homestayfriend, and we will carry out an initial visit to meet you at your home.

It is our overseas students who have a preference for the type of accommodation that you are offering.  We find that many British students request more independent living arrangements, such as a shared student house.

As many of our overseas student study here for short periods of time, e.g. 12 week courses, homestay accommodation offers them the flexibility they require.  Using Homestayfriend to arrange their accommodation enables them to make contact with you prior to them leaving their country.  Any extension the student wishes to make with you once the initial period of rental has ended is a private agreement between you and the student.

To place your property with Homestayfriend, please go to www.homestayfriend.com where you will find the information you need to house a student from Plymouth University.

When applying to be included on our database you must:

  • Submit a Landlord's Application Form for each property and retain a copy for your records. If there is more than one flat in a property, you need to complete an application form for each
  • Sign and return the Landlord's Guidelines again keeping a copy for your records
  • Send us a copy of the original gas safety certificate for each property
  • Send us a copy of the original electricity certificate for each property
  • Send us a copy of the fire alarm safety certificate where applicable
  • Send us a copy of the license if it is an HMO licensable property – this is to include any recommendations that the local authority have asked

Please send all documents and application to the Student Accommodation Office, University of Plymouth, Drake Circus, Plymouth, Devon PL4 8AA.

Please note that we will not arrange a visit unless all the relevant safety certificates are included with the landlord application form and guidelines.

You will need internet access in order to update and maintain any properties registered on our database.  You will also need an email address that you frequently access.

It is University policy to visit all property offered for inclusion on the database of student accommodation on an annual basis. On receipt of your application we will contact you to arrange a visit; however, due to a varying workload within the Student Accommodation Office, it may not always be possible to visit properties at short notice.
